Background of the Study
Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life of patients with life-threatening illnesses by addressing physical, psychological, and emotional needs. For terminally ill cardiac patients, palliative care plays a vital role in managing symptoms such as pain, dyspnea, and emotional distress, ensuring comfort and dignity in their final stages of life (Oluwaseun et al., 2023). Despite global advancements in palliative care, access remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas such as Taraba State, where healthcare services are limited.
Nurses are central to palliative care, providing holistic patient-centered care that includes pain management, psychosocial support, and family counseling (Adelakun et al., 2024). Their role extends beyond medical care to emotional and spiritual support, which significantly enhances the quality of life for terminally ill patients (Eke et al., 2023). In cardiac palliative care, nurses help patients cope with distressing symptoms and educate families on end-of-life care decisions, which reduces unnecessary hospital admissions and enhances patient dignity.
Despite the importance of palliative care, there is limited research on the role of nurses in improving the quality of life of terminally ill cardiac patients in Nigeria. Many healthcare facilities do not have structured palliative care programs, and nurses often struggle with resource constraints, inadequate training, and emotional burnout (Onyekachi et al., 2023). Understanding the impact of nurses in palliative care is crucial in addressing these challenges and improving end-of-life care for cardiac patients in Taraba State.
Statement of the Problem
Many terminally ill cardiac patients in Nigeria experience poor quality of life due to inadequate palliative care services. In Taraba State, where healthcare resources are limited, patients often endure uncontrolled symptoms, poor pain management, and a lack of emotional support (Abdullahi et al., 2023). Nurses, who are key providers of palliative care, often lack the necessary training and resources to offer optimal care, further exacerbating patient suffering.
The absence of structured palliative care programs in many hospitals has led to increased hospital readmissions and reduced patient dignity at the end of life. If the role of nurses in palliative care significantly improves patient outcomes, then investing in nursing-led palliative care programs could enhance the overall quality of life for terminally ill cardiac patients in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on terminally ill cardiac patients receiving palliative care in healthcare facilities in Taraba State. Data will be collected from nurses and patients to assess the impact of palliative care interventions on quality of life.
Limitations of the study may include difficulties in assessing long-term patient outcomes due to the progressive nature of cardiac illnesses. Additionally, emotional distress among patients and caregivers may impact the responses provided during interviews or surveys.
